1850 Clinton County Kentucky Census
SMITH, James, 39 m, farmer, NC; Sarah, 22 f, NC; Nathaniel , 16 m, KY; Roda, 10 f, TN; Jefferson, 7 m,KY; Charles, 5/1 2 m, KY
Nathaniel does not show up with all the other kids at the w riting and the execution of James Turner Smiths will. Neit her does Nathaniel's brother Jefferson. While it is just s peculation it is possible that he was lost as a casualty i n the Civil War? Nathaniel was 26 in 1860 when the Civil W ar started and his brother Jefferson was 17. Neither of th ese boys appear in the will of James Turner Smith. Their s ister Rhoda appears in the will so we know there was a rela tionship between James Turner Smith and the children from h is first marriage but for some reason the two boys Jefferso n and Nathaniel do not appear. This would indicate most li kely they were not alive at the time. The Civil War is a p rime suspect although it could have been from any number o f other things.

SMITH, James, 39 m, farmer, NC; Sarah, 22 f, NC; Nathaniel , 16 m, KY; Roda, 10 f, TN; Jefferson, 7 m,KY; Charles, 5/1 2 m, KY
Seven years older than her husband and it is interesting th at while Rhoda is born in Tennessee, her younger brother an d her older brother list Kentucky as their birthplace in th e 1850 Kentucky census. It might be that the Smith famil y lived on the border between Clinton County, Kentucky an d Overton County, Tennessee.
