The 3rd (Brazelton's) Tennessee Cavalry Battalion was organ ized with six companies in 1861 as a twelve month organizat ion, with Lieutenant Colonel William Brazelton, Jr., and Ma jor James C. Bradford as Field Officers. On March 27, 186 2 the Adjutant and Inspector General's Office ordered: "Th e 3rd Cavalry Battalion, Lieutenant Colonel William Brazelt on, Jr., with companies of Captains McHenry, McCaskill, Ble dsoe and Sanders, are hereby organized into a regiment to b e known and designated as the 1st Tennessee Cavalry Regimen t, with colonel William Brazelton Jr., and Lieutenant Colon el James F. Brewer as field officers. This order was appare ntly never put into effect, for on May 12, 1862, the battal ion was reorganized with James E. Carter as Lieutenant Colo nel, and Onslow Bean as Major, and was officially recognize d as the 14th (Carter's) Tennessee Cavalry Battalion. Final ly on November 14, 1862, the battalion was increased to a r egiment by the addition of four other companies; two othe r companies were added in 1863.         Washington, Sulliva n and Carter counties. Not accounted for
on regimental roste r dated Feb 1865, Capt Edward Gammon.
Prior to the organization of the regiment, the battalion ha d been operating in teh neighborhood of Cumberland and Bi g Creek Gaps, along the line of railroad. When the regimen t was organized it was assigned to Brig Gen John Pegram's C avalry Brigade to Lt Gen E. Kirby Smith's Department. Thi s brigade was composed of Howard's Alabama Regiment, 2nd (A shby's), 4th (Starnes'), J. E. Carter's Tennessee Cavalry R egiment, and Marshall's Battery. Prior to the Battle of Mur freesboro, on Dec 29, 1862, Carter's Regiment joined Brig G en Joseph Wheeler's Brigade, and participated in his raid a round the Federal Army from Jefferson Springs to LaVergne , to Nolensville, to Murfreesboro. It was engaged on Dec 3 1 along the Murfreesboro Pike. Following this battle, the r egiment returned to Pegram's Brigade, in the Department o f East Tennessee under Brig Gen D. S. Donelson. On Feb 20 , 1863, this brigade was reported as composed of the 1st Ge orgia, 1st Louisiana, 1st (Carter's) Tennessee, 2nd (Ashby' s) Tennessee Regiments, the 16th Tennessee Cavalry Battalio n, Captain N. C. Langford's Escort, and Huwald's Battery an d was near Clinton, Tennessee.
However, Captain R. S. VanDyke's Company C had been detache d to Col A. W. Raynolds' Brigade in the Department of Missi ssippi and Eastern Louisiana, and served in the campaign ar ound Vicksburg, and the siege of Vicksburg, until the surre nder of that city on July 4, 1863, when it was temporaril y attached to Col T. N. Waul's Texas Legion.
With Pegram's Brigade, the regiment took part in operation s in Lincoln, Boyle and Garrard counties of Kentucky, and w as engaged Mar 30, 1863 at the junction of the Stanford an d Crab Orchard Roads where it was under the command of Co l J. S. Scott, of the 1st Louisiana Regiment. Gen Pegram' s comment on this operation is interesting: "For Col Scott' s operations, I refer you to the accompanying report. Touch ing this curious document I have only to say that I canno t but admire the ingenuity with which Col Scott has attempt ed to account for disobedience of orders and dilatoriness o f action which it is my sincere belief lost us the fight. " Col. Carter reported five officers and 32 men as casualti es in this operation.
On Apr 25, 1863, Col J. J. Morrison was reported in comman d of the brigade, now listed as composed of 1st GA, 1st an d 2nd TN reg, 12th and 16ht Cavalry battalions, and Huwald' s Battery. The brigade was at Albany, Kentucky on May 1, a t Travisville, Fentress county, KY on May 2. On July 23, t he Chief of Staff, at Knoxville, ordered Col Scott, then co mmanding the brigade to send 300 horses of 1st (Carter's) R egiment to Loudon, TN. On July 31, Pegram's Brigade, consis ting of 1st and 6th GA Reg, 7th NC Bat, 1 TN Reg, Rucker' s Legion, and Huwald's Battery was reported at Ebenezer. O n Aug 15, Carter's Reg. was reportedd as operating near Cli nton. It particpated in the fighting around Cumberland Ga p which resulted in the capture of that point by the Federa l troops on Sep 9, 1863, but the regiment had escaped up the
valley before the surrender, and on Sep 11 Col Carter was r eported in command of the brigade near Lee Courthouse. On S ep 18, Carter's Regiment was driven from the ford above Kin gsport after a severe fight.
Somewhere about this time, the regiment was assigned to Bri g Gen John S. Williams' Cavalry Brigade, composed of the 16 th GA Bat, 4th KY Reg, 10th KY Bat, May's KY Reg, 1st TN an d 64th VA reg., which on Oct 31, 1863 was reported at Saltv ille, VA. On the same date, Oct 31, 1863, Special Order Num ber 282 of the Army of TN placed 1st (Carter's) Regiment i n the 2nd Brigade of Maj Gen Joseph Wheeler's Cavalry Corp s near Knoxville ordered: "Brig Gen W. Y. C. Humes will pro ceed to Dalton, GA and report to Brig Gen H. B. Davidson fo r assignment to a a cavalry brigade composed of the followi ng regiments: 1st (6th) Wheeler's, 1st (Carter's), 4th (Bax ter Smith's), 11th (Homan's). On November 20, 1863, Genera l Bragg's organization of the Army of TN showed the regimen t in Brig Gen Henry B. Davidson's Brigade, maj Gen John A . Wharton's Division, Maj Gen Joseph Wheeler's Cavalry Corp s. This listed the brigade as composed of 1st (Carter's), 2 nd (Ashby's), 4th (McLemore's), 6th (James T. Wheeler's), a nd 11th (Holman's) Regiments.
Despite these order, Carter's Regiment was reported near Ro gersville on Nov 1, in Williams' Brigade, with Col H. L. Gi ltner commanding. On Nov 30, and on Dec 31, Colonel Carte r was reported as commanding the brigade. Perhaps the expla nation for this apparent contradiction may be found in a st atement by Colonel Carter in his sketch of the regiment i n Lindsley's Annals. He stated that Captain Swearingen's Co mpany K was with General Johnston on his memorable march fr om Dalton to Atlanta, and did some hard fighting. Apparentl y this company was listed in orders of battle as the 1st T N Cavalry Regiment, for it was mentioned in Federal report s of the fighting around Marietta, GA on Jun 20, 1864, an d was shown as a member of Ashby's Brigade, of Hume's Divis ion on Jun 30, 1864.
In the meantime, Captain VanDyke's company C had returned f rom Mississippi, and on Nov 24, 1863 was at Charleston, T N with Col John C. Carter's 38th TN Inf Reg. Colonel Carte r highly commended Capt VanDyke and his 44 men for the par t they played in helping his forces to evacuate Charlesto n without being captured. Capt Van Dyke's company later bec ame major, but it is not known whether or not Swearingen' s company was ever reunited with the rest of the regiment.
On Apr 16, 1864, the regiment was transferred to Vaughn's B rigade, of Brig Gen J. C. Vaughn's Division, and reported 2 48 men present. It remained in this brigade until the end o f the war. As part of Vaughn's Brigade, the regiment move d into VA in early 1864, fought at the Battle of Piedmont , or New Hope Church, and in the subsequent campaign in th e Valley of VA under General Jubal Early. On Aug 22, 1864 , Maj Gen Ransom recommended the consolidation of the 12t h and 16th TN Cav Bat with the 1st TN regiment under Colone l Carter, whom he called " a fine officer." This recommenda tion was not accepted and these units continued in the sam e brigade, as separate organizations.
The last record of the regiment on Feb 28, 1865, showed i t still in Vaughn's Brigade, with Brig Gen John Echols in c omand of the Department. Echols disbanded his forces upon l earning of the surrender of General Lee at Appomatox Courth ouse.
