1850 Polk county TN census shows Lace Harris

Old man Lacy Harris, who lived in the borders of Grassy Cov e, was a great coon hunter, and he had a small lamp fille d with coon grease which he carried with him, and when hi s dogs would tree a coon, he would strikefire with his knif e and a flint and some spunk, and light his lamp and hang i t up high on something, and then the coon would turn and ga ze at the lamp, and its eyes would reflect the light like t wo small moons, and then Lacy would see the eyes,and by aim ing between them with his long flintlock rifle, he could ki ll the coon and then go on for another.
