Made application while in Clay county, TN (Willow Grove) So ldiers PensionApplication states: "I joined Cpt. Kaywood s Co. under Col Jim Gaspie, at old Sulphur Springs in Rhe a County, TN in the later part of July 1861. I served in s aid co. 11 months and then was transferred to Co. A Cpt. Bu rton Leuty of Cavalry.I served with the cavalry unti Oct 18 63 when near Knoxville I was captured with Abe Morrel and J ames Beard, both of whom are now dead. We were captured b y Col. Byrds men and taken to Kingston and there they charg ed me with causing the death of Lee Knight, a U.S. recruiti ng officer. I came clear of the charge. I was then give n a choice of taking the oath or going to Camp Chase. (1864 ). And on account of my old father who was there, a pensio ner with other old citizens, all of whose influence was bro ught to bear on me to take the oath and take my father home . I then took the oath and was sent home with my father t o the Grassy Cove in Cumberland county Tennessee. I was th en nineteen years old. Except three trials I made to get b ack to the army I staid with my father until the close of t he war. I never intended to ask for a pension until a fe w years ago when I broke down and am now unable to work, th e only way I have to make a living. Witness Ja M. White S igned Ben (x) Harris (his mark). Subscribed and sworn befor e me October the 23, 1916 LDBohannan, clerk.
Medical problems: Caricele in left testicle (infertility) . Chronic Otitis media (middle ear infection). Ulcer in l eft nasal cavity. He has evidence of a fracture of right cl avicle which he tells me he received in the war (thrown fro m horse). Has scars on legs from old chronic ulcers whic h are apparently well now. Has beginning arterioschlerosi s (hardening of arteries) common to senility. He also tell s me that he suffers from recurrent attacks of sufferatio n of frontal sinus. 20 Sep 1912.
Born and raised in Tennessee, left TN 12 years after war, h as been back three years. This was dated 30 Aug 1921. Gon e from TN from 1877 until 1918. Where?
Got a 24 hour permit from the army and when he tried to ret urn was cut off from his company by federals and was unabl e to get back.
Statement made on 11/24/1916 by LDBohannan in behalf of Be n Harris' application for pension: After he came home wit h his father his experience with those Cumberland Mountai n Bandits was thrilling. After the surrender his friends be gged him to leave the county to save his life. He came t o Overton county TN, staid awhile and moved to Kentucky, af ter staying there awhile came back to Overton county, TN an d has lived here ever since.
This last statement makes it very possible that he is the B enjamin Harding Harris listed on the social security applic ation presented by Curtis Elmore Harris, showing a Benjami n Harding Harris as his father where he was born in KY. Cu rt Harris also had an ulcer in his nose just like this Benj amin H. Harris.
Was a Baptist minister at one time. Also said to have die d in Clay county, TN.
