Christian - Primitive Baptist
Farmer

Clinton County, Kentucky was formed in 1835 from Cumberlan d and Wayne Counties. It was named after DeWitt Clinton , a former New York City mayor and Governor of New York. M ost records were lost in a courthouse fire in 1864. Anothe r fire in 1980 destroyed some records.

John Chester was born in Kentucky and left as a small chil d with his brother Samuel Vernon and sister Maggie Ada, hi s dad Jonathan and his mom Maggie for Texas. The family fa rmed in Sangor, Texas for a time and eventually moved fro m there to Springer, Oklahoma in Indian Territory.

After marrying Lurah John farmed for a time near the Atoka , Oklahoma area. Lurah's parents lived there also. John f armed cotton and due to the area receiving a lot of rain th ere was an uprising of boll weavels that ruined his cotto n crop for two consecutive years. He lost everything and e nded up living in the home of his wife's parents, the Shelt on's. It was while living in this home that John Chester S mith Jr. was born. John Sr. did not like farming in this a rea because it was too wet. He moved from the Atoka farm t o Temple at this time. The family initially rented a far m house near Jonathan's farm and later moved to the farm th ey owned until retirement.

John Chester received a 160 acre farm from his father Jonat han. It was right down the road from Jonathan's farm. Whe n a local school house was closed John Chester and his fami ly tore the building down and removed all the nails from th e boards and carried the materials back to their farm. The y then built a new farm house from the wood.

County Line Note. Though John Chester and Lurah lived jus t a couple of miles down the same road from his dad Jonatha n and Maggie Smith the Cotton county line runs between thei r two farms. Jonathan's farm was in Jefferson County and J ohn Chester's farm was in Cotton county.

J.C. Smith Jr. remembers his dad John Chester Sr. saying "W e are Cherokee"
