These census records show how difficult it can be to follo w a family by using only the census. When I contacted the f amily, Herbert turned out to be Robert. Ottaway was never c alled Oliver and John Baun was never shown with them. Als o Otis in 1910 had to be Earl 1 year old old in 1900.
Ottaway had a crippled hand, the result of an accident wit h a hay knife as a young man, leaving him with only one fin ger and a thumb. I wonder how they traveled , they surely d id it a lot. Ottaway born in IN, married in IL, second chil d in KS, third in TX, fourth and fifth in KS, sixth in MO , back to TX in 1910 and the to OK where they died.
In 1870 census he was living with brother John and his wif e Alice in Springfield, IL.

Farmer

Known as John A. at time of death, but records indicate tha t he was born Jonathan and had a twin named Allen. Starte d going by John as soon as age 22. Had a good cow dog (bor der collie) that obeyed his commands given by hand or voice.
Had two grass quarters across the road from the home plac e in Jefferson Co. OK.
His mother was ashamed of her Indian blood. He never owne d a car. He offered to trade one of his grass quarters fo r his grandson Benjamin Lee Smith so he could have someon e to drive him around. Bennie's mom Lurah exploded and sai d that she would not sell her own flesh and blood.

Jonathan's farm near Temple, Oklahoma is 6 1/2 Miles East o f town. It is 2 miles down the road further than John Ches ter Smith's farm. (His son)

J.C. Smith told me his Dad John Chester used to say of Jona than that he was the finest horseman he ever saw. No one h ad a way with horses like he did.

Benny Smith remembers Jonathan and says that he was shor t and stocky in stature. He said that he was built very mu ch like Kenneth Smith Benny's son. It was said he had a ha ir trigger temper and could be very volatile.

The memory of Jonathan in Kentucky is that he and his wif e Maggie moved in with a man who had a farm. He was disabl ed and unable to take care of the place. In time he put i n his will that the farm would go to Jonathan when he died . When this took place and Jonathan had gained the farm, t he former owners's son showed up one day and demanded the p roperty be his. In the argument he pulled a gun on Jonatha n. Jonathan took the gun away from him and pistol whippe d him with his own gun. As a result he had to go into hidi ng. When this happened his wife and her brother, Billy Boo her, disposed of the stock and the farm and the three of t hem along with 3 of Jonathan's children rode a river boat d own the Cumberland river to the Ohio river to the Mississip pi river where they boarded another river boat headed south .

Jonathan and Maggie ended up farming in Sangor, Texas. I t was from this farm that they moved to Indian Territory.

Springer has since been changed to Gene Au trey, Oklahoma . One day on this farm Jonathan awoke and looked out acros s his land and noticed smoke rising. He sent his sons to i nvestigate what it was. When they came back they reporte d a lady and two men were on their property and said they m eant to take the land. Several days later this lady appear ed in town full of buckshot. A deputy was dispatched to Jo nathan's farm to arrest him. In the ensuing discussion Jon athan cut him up with a knife and went into hiding again . While he was in hiding his wife would take her boys at n ight and bed them down in the corn fields fearing that th e law would come and take her boys in order to force Jonath an to surrender. This farm was subsequently disposed of b y Maggie and a second farm purchased near Temple, Oklahoma . While living in Temple Jonathan's owned a Kentucky Walki ng Horse. He could ride the 60 miles from Temple to Spring er in one day, do his business in Springer that night, an d return to Temple the next day in one days ride.

While living on his Temple farm, Jonathan acquired a tota l of five 160 acre farms. When Jonathan had passed away an d Maggie was settling her affairs a farm was given to: Roy , Ada, Chester, & Ed. They sold the grass quarter farm acr oss the road from Jonathan's farm for money. Vernon and Ji m received money in this settlement time.

Jonathan was said to never be afraid of any dog. When appr oaching a home or business where a large dog would run ou t snarling, Jonathan would remove his hat and hold it out t o the dog. When it looked down at the hat Jonathan would p roceed to kick the dog as hard as he could under the chin , sending the dog sprawling.

He would take all the kids into Ardmore, Oklahoma yearly t o get a new pair of shoes. Uncle Jim told that Jonathan w as not very sociable. He remembers the wagon ride into tow n one year where Jonathan had just tied up the team to a hi tching post when a local businessman came walking by on th e sidewalk. He said "Good morning, Mr Smith" to Jonathan t o which Jonathan replied "Good Morning, you S.O.B."
