John and Lurah were married in a horse drawn buggy on the c urve of the road coming into Hastings. They sat in their b uggy while the Minister led them in their vows. They cover ed their laps with a comforter which Jay Smith has to thi s day. We have wondered recently how the two met consideri ng that we thought that with John Chester living over by Ha stings, Oklahoma on his fathers farm and Lurah living in th e Davis - Atoka, Oklahoma area with her parents that the di stance was formidable. In January of 2002 J.C. Smith and R uth visited Elbern Shelton in Texas and asked him how the t wo could have met and courted. Elbern said that what happe ned was that when Lurah's parents left the Greenville, Tex as area to move into Oklahoma they did not go directly to t he Davis area as we had thought. They first moved to the H astings, Oklahoma area and rented farm land there and lived . Elbern remembers hearing that his Grandad and Jonathan S mith (Chester's dad) got together to butcher hogs as the y were close neighbors. This would explain how Chester an d Lurah met and possibly courted. The Shelton family lef t Hastings and moved to the Davis area later.[Master.FTW]
